Since getting my Apple Watch last week, I’ve been on the hunt for a good charging stand for it. The accessories for the Apple Watch are still in a state of infancy with only a few option. After looking around and finding nothing that I liked, I decided to make my own.
When placing the Apple Watch on the charger, it uses magnets to connect the watch and inductive charging to transfer the power. I wanted to embed the charger into a tree stump so I’d have a small pedestal to put it on while charging overnight.
I was able to find some tree stumps on Etsy for relatively cheap. They were originally intended to be place card holders but I found them to be the perfect size for the charger. I had a few different sizes of hex shank spade bits but I found the 1 inch size was the closest fit. The initial hole I drilled was a bit too shallow and a bit too small in diameter for the charger to fit.
It took some trial and error to get the right fit. I used a dremel sanding bit to widen the diameter of the hole and kept testing to see how the charger would fit. After about 10 minutes of sanding and testing, the charger fit perfectly. I also needed a small insert for where the cord would come out from the side. I ended up using a 3/16 drill bit to carve that part out.
The charger works and looks great on my night stand! It took about an hour to make and about $5 worth of supplies if you already have the tools. Below is the list of things you need to make this yourself.
- Tree stump 2” or larger in diameter
- Power drill
- Dremel with Sanding bit
- 1 inch hex shank spade bit
- 3/16 drill bit
