Whenever we travel, we like to get out into nature at least once or twice during the trip. Forêt Montmorency allowed us this get away, being only 45 minutes north of Québec City. It was our first time experiencing snow shoeing and we didn't really know quiet what to expect.
The Montmorency Forest's mission is to be a welcoming environment committed to excellence in the areas of teaching, research and public education related to sustainable forest management.
When you haven't tried to hike through 5+ feet deep worth of snow, you don't really understand the need for snow shoes. The extra surface area and the crampon cleat really helps, especially when we went off trail. There were a few times where I took a wrong step and found myself waist high in snow. With the right equipment, we were able to see some amazing scenes that we wouldn't have if we were just in boots.
Étienne was our guide through this winter wonderland and he took time to explain so many things about our surroundings. During our three hours hike, we found out about different animal tracks, tasted herbal tree sap, and learned more about what makes up a healthy forest. We lucked out in being matched up with such a great guide for our hike!
Whether it be Norway, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, or Canada, I think we've found that our idea travel locations are cold weather climates. There's something magical about these snow covered mountains that bring us wonder and life. Here's to a new decade of adventures!
